A damp alarm is a type of electronic device that will send you a warning whenever it comes into contact with damp, moisture or water. It is very similar to the way a smoke detector works, accept it is for damp. Damp alarms are often referred to as leak alarms, automatic damp sensors, or electronic automatic damp or leak detectors.
They are often used in any domestic or comercial building to tell habitants to the presence of damp or water promptly to ensure that damage can be reduced by taking care of the root cause as fast as the issue is found. The basic idea is that they will alert the user to leaks before any major damage occurs.
Damp Alarm Sensors & Alerts
They are usually about the same size as a smoke alarm and the batteries can be changed in the same way. These types of alarms have sensors located on the feet or side of the case, which are calibrated at the time of set up to log the current surface moisture content level as regular, and, only when this water content level is surpassed, will the alarm set off.
This alarm is normally higher than 80 decibels: That’s around the same noise as a hoover, when you are the one carrying out the hoovering. Contact us today to get a no cost quotation for your damp alarm supply and installation.
How Does a Damp Alarm System Work?
The vast majority of damp alarms are powered by a single battery, which they are normally supplied with (normally 9V: PP3 or P9), or, 23A (12V) batteries. If you have an existing fire alarm and burglar alarm system installed, a damp alarm can be hard wired and integrated in to the existing system. Damp alarms can also be installed as a stand alone system to run off the main power.
For those looking for a low cost option, with no planned works or having to tap into the existing power supply, the battery powered damp alarm system is recommended.
The sensor on a damp alarm system is found along the side of the case or on the feet of the damp alarm as mentioned previously: it consists of a pair of thin wires, located a tiny length apart. When moisture has contact with the two wires, the resistance among the two is lower, making it possible for the current to travel via the circuit to the alarm, that is started and alerts any person in proximity to the leak.

I have been building houses for over 10 years and from time to time, new builds develop faults that can be tricky to trace. We brought in James de Miguel to provide us with a report on where we were going wrong with a rather complicated new build that involved a basement that was allowing water ingress. Within half an hour of being on site James and his colleagues identified the issues and provided the exact steps to fix them. Without his survey, I feel we would of been chasing our own tails for days if not weeks, trying to find out why we had so much water ingress. James has saved us time and money and we are very grateful that we found him.
I contacted James de Miguel after a recommendation from a friend. My brand new house developed a series of cracks on the exterior walls and after numerous failed attempts by local builders, surveyors and even the original architect, to try and identify the cause of these cracks I had no clue what to do next. Thankfully, James was able to identify the exact cause of the issues and handed me a detailed report on what had caused the cracking and the next steps to take in order to remedy them. I couldn’t be happier with the result.
I have been working with James de Miguel for a few years now and can honestly say that I have not come across a more savvy surveyor when it comes to fault finding. James is switched on, his reports are always on time and he has never failed to deliver. I would wholeheartedly recommend his services to anyone seeking a definitive answer as to what exactly is going wrong with their building. I now consult with James on all projects I undertake as his input is vital to the success of my projects. A big thank you to James and his team.
